Hi-Temperature Plastic Bonding

A 3-layer polysulfone plate shown with two 2-layer polyetherimide blocks

MicroAdvances introduces high temperature plastic bonding. If your fluid circuit application requires resistance to high temperature or resistance to certain chemicals, choose polysulfone or polyetherimide (Ultem®) for your design.

Polysulfone is an economical amber transparent plastic that offers heat resistance up to 340°F. Polysulfone is outstanding where long term service in hot water environments and/or repeated steam sterilization is needed. High rigidity and tensile impact encourage the use of polysulfone in demanding applications.

Polyetherimide (Ultem®) is an amber transparent (slightly darker than polysulfone) high performance polymer which combines high strength and rigidity at high temperatures with long term heat resistance up to 410°F. It offers excellent dimensional stability combined with broad chemical resistance. Polyetherimide is also inherently flame resistant and low smoke generating. It excels in medical reusable applications requiring repeated sterilization.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
Polyetherimide resists a wide range of chemicals including most hydrocarbons, alcohol's, and fully halogenated solvents. It resists mineral acids and tolerates short-term exposure to mild bases. Partially halogenated solvents are acceptable to polyetherimide.

HYDOLYTIC STABILITY
Hydrolytic stability is good with greater than 85% tensile strength retention after 10,000-hr. boiling water immersion and 100% tensile strength retention after 2000 steam autoclaving cycles at 270°F.

RADIATION RESISTANCE Polyetherimide has good resistance to UV and gamma radiation, the latter shown by a 94% retention of tensile strength after treatment of 400 megarads of cobalt irradiation.
